In thinking about light and how it affects the overall way we might interpret an image, a pre-med student photographs the body under natural lighting with connections to medical terms found in her textbook in order to question the sterile images of the body she is accustomed to viewing.

For the documentary project this student chose to photograph her Aunt whose time is spent at home caring for her husband and other family members. Taking inspiration from Carrie Mae Weems’s “The Kitchen Table Series”, the student portrays her Aunt as the protagonist amongst several secondary characters who enter the frame in small and almost unnoticed ways.

A student explores the way reality is often skewed during dreams but can still hint at real events. Several works by surrealist filmmaker Luis Buñuel were referenced throughout this body of work.

This student chose to photograph outdoor locations and then pick up objects that she found in the immediate vicinity. The images were then printed and then objects laid on top of the prints to then be re-photographed.

A student with friends and family who have been both the victims and perpetrators of gun violence looked to highlight the locations in her neighborhood where these acts occurred. Each image is paired with text from newspaper articles that in their brevity highlight the regular occurrence of these events. This work was made after a class visit to The Museum of Contemporary Photography and influenced by Chicago photographers, Dawoud Bey, and Paul D’Amato.

As part of the visiting artist program, I have been able to invite artists to come in and then co-teach a variety of alternative processes that are not regularly covered within the program. This is an opportunity for the students to experiment, learn new processes, and also work alongside another photographer.

Over the course of two days, visiting artist Rashod Taylor and I taught students how to coat plates, operate a view camera, and process tintypes. Once advanced students were trained, they were able to assist others in the process as well. During the event students, faculty, and staff from the entire department were invited to have their portrait made by my students. In the end, approximately 50 tintypes were created.

A collaborative film made between students studying sound art and experimental filmmaking. They took a nuclear testing propaganda film about the Bikini Atoll testing site and altered it through hand-painting, bleaching, and sound mixing. In the end, the students work twisted the film’s original intention.
